Black Mamba Gives Back with our Merch Range

Black Mamba Foods derives its name from the most dangerous snake in Africa, which is endemic to Eswatini (for better or for worse!). We chose this name because we admire this powerful reptile and because it resonated with the metaphorical 'bite' of our chilli sauces. 

Having taken our name as a nod to this compelling creature, we also believe it is our duty to generate awareness about the incredible work of the Eswatini Antivenom Foundation.

The problem

Thousands of people in Africa die or are permanently maimed every year because of snake bites. In Eswatini, the most impoverished rural populations are the ones that are affected the most. The areas in which they live and work are less populated with plenty of natural vegetation still intact, and these are regions in which the local fauna, including the Black Mamba, tends to flourish. 

The good news is that timely treatment with appropriate antivenom, along with modern medical care can prevent, reverse or at least minimise the major clinical aspects of a Black Mamba's bite.

However, antivenoms are very expensive when compared with the average income of the people most likely to require them in Eswatini. This fact, in combination with a stretched medical budget and overtaxed care system, can lead to needless deaths, and or lifelong maladies that rural people struggle to overcome in order to work and make a living. 

The solution

The Eswatini Antivenom Foundation does a wonderful job providing free antivenom and payment for medical expenses for those in need, preventing unnecessary losses of lives and limbs.

They also create awareness about snakes, explaining how to react during snake encounters, how to provide first aid for snake bites, and also why these misunderstood and often feared reptiles need to be respected and cared for and are vital to our ecosystems.
